Tonga Seal Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualification via Pacific Nations Cup Semi-Final Spot

Tonga have officially booked their place at the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia after advancing to the semi-finals of the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup 2025.
Their qualification was confirmed following Fiji’s victory over Samoa, which ensured Tonga’s second-place finish in Pool A. The ‘Ikale Tahi opened their campaign with a commanding 30–16 win over Samoa in Nuku’alofa, a result that ultimately secured their path to the knockout stages alongside defending champions Fiji.
The Pacific Nations Cup not only crowns a regional champion but also serves as a key qualification pathway to Rugby World Cup 2027. With Fiji and Japan already qualified from RWC 2023, the three best non-qualified teams from the tournament earn direct passage to Australia. Tonga become the 19th nation confirmed for rugby’s showpiece, which will expand to 24 teams for the first time.
This will mark Tonga’s 10th Rugby World Cup appearance, having only missed the 1991 edition. The team will aim to break new ground in 2027 by reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
“Securing Rugby World Cup qualification is a proud moment for Tonga and a reward for the hard work of our players and staff. Now our focus is on competing strongly in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-finals and continuing to build towards Australia 2027,” said a Tonga Rugby Union spokesperson.
Tonga will face the winner of Pool B (Japan, Canada, or USA) in the PNC semi-finals next weekend in Denver, Colorado. Currently ranked 17th in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, the team will also look ahead to December 2025, when the official RWC 2027 Pool Draw will determine their group-stage opponents.
Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 will run from 1 October to 13 November 2027 in Australia, featuring six pools of four teams and a newly introduced round of 16, ushering in a fresh era of inclusivity and entertainment for the sport.
