Betway SA20 Season 3 Delivers Jobs, Growth & A Boost For South African Cricket

The Betway SA20 continues to cement its status as more than just a cricket tournament, with the release of the Season 3 Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) confirming its growing contribution to South Africa’s economy.
Fresh from the success of the Season 4 player auction, where R116.9 million was invested in South African players, the report highlights how the League has extended its influence beyond the pitch. Season 3 delivered substantial increases across GDP contribution, direct expenditure, household income, and job creation.
According to the EIA, the League’s GDP contribution rose sharply from R4.3 billion in Season 2 to R5.3 billion in Season 3. The growth reflects the positive knock-on effect for households, communities, and small businesses that benefit from matchday activity and the influx of fans and visitors across the host cities.
“Betway SA20 is proving to be a game-changer, not only for cricket in South Africa but also for the country’s economy,” League Commissioner Graeme Smith said.
“The recent auction highlighted how the franchises are committed to investing in the South African pipeline, while this report showcases how the League’s impact is extending beyond the field. It’s incredible to see how, after only three seasons, we’ve been able to drive growth and create opportunities for our cricketers, the sports and hospitality industry, and the greater South African economy.”
Season 3 saw fans continue to rally behind the competition, with nearly 400 000 tickets sold — equating to 76% of capacity across all fixtures. The final sold out for a third consecutive season, while the tournament also celebrated the historic milestone of its 1 millionth ticket sold overall.
These numbers translated directly into economic impact:
Direct Expenditure increased from R1.5 billion in Season 2 to R1.8 billion.
Annualised job opportunities rose by 2%, reaching 8 199 jobs.
Household income contribution surpassed the billion-rand mark for the first time, climbing to R1.4 billion.
The League now looks ahead to Season 4, which will launch in a new festive-season timeslot on 26 December 2025, giving fans an opportunity to experience world-class cricket during the peak holiday period.
Tickets for Season 4 go on sale from 10 October via www.sa20.co.za and at all stadium ticket offices nationwide.
