Canada Qualify for Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 After Reaching Pacific Nations Cup Semi-Finals

Canada have secured their place at the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia after booking a semi-final spot in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup 2025.

Their qualification was confirmed after Japan’s 47–21 victory over the USA, which cemented Canada’s second-place finish in Pool B. Canada now join Fiji, Tonga, and Japan as the fourth team from the Pacific Nations Cup to qualify for RWC 2027.

Canada’s campaign began with a strong 34–20 win over rivals USA in Calgary before falling to Japan 57–15 in Sendai. That opening victory proved decisive, ensuring their progression to the knockout stages alongside Japan.

The Pacific Nations Cup not only crowns a regional champion but also serves as a direct qualification pathway to Rugby World Cup 2027, with the top three non-qualified teams earning automatic spots. With Fiji and Japan already qualified through RWC 2023, Canada and Tonga have now taken two of the remaining berths.

Canada become the 21st nation confirmed for the expanded 24-team Rugby World Cup. This will be their 10th appearance at the tournament, having only missed the 2023 edition in France. Their best finish remains the 1991 quarter-finals, and they will aim to return to the knockout stages in Australia.

“Qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2027 is a huge step forward for Canadian rugby,” said a Rugby Canada spokesperson. “We are immensely proud of the team’s fight in this Pacific Nations Cup, and we look forward to building momentum through the semi-finals and beyond.”

Canada will now face Fiji in the semi-finals in Denver, Colorado, next weekend, with kick-off scheduled for 18h35 MT. While their primary objective of qualification has been achieved, the squad remains focused on competing for the Pacific Nations Cup title.

Currently ranked 24th in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, Canada will also look ahead to December 2025, when the official RWC 2027 Draw will reveal their pool-stage opponents.

The USA, meanwhile, will face Samoa in the fifth-place play-off on 14 September, a fixture that doubles as a second chance to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2027.

Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 will run from 1 October – 13 November 2027 in Australia. The event marks the dawn of a new era with a 24-team format, featuring six pools of four and a newly introduced round of 16, ensuring more opportunities for global nations to shine.
